As summer approaches in Chattanooga, it’s time to think about your garden plans. Do you love a variety of colorful flowers? Are you an herb or vegetable grower? You probably have a lot of tools and other garden supplies that need to be stored so you can get to them to tend to your plants throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Here are some great garden shed tips for summer seasonal storage for all your supplies, so you can enjoy your gardening time!
Know What You Need
Before starting to supply and organize your garden shed, you’ll need to have a good understanding of how you will use it this summer and throughout the year. What are your gardening goals? What are your plans for how you will use the shed? Determine whether you will use the shed for storage only or if you want a workspace as well, such as a potting table.
If you have an existing shed that you want to reorganize, it can help to remove everything from inside the shed and take a careful look at what you have and what you might need in the future. You can also take this opportunity to get rid of anything you don’t – or won’t – need. Do you have all the gardening tools you’ll need to plant seeds or get rid of weeds? Do you have extra sets of tools that you’ve collected through the years?
Get Organized
Once you know what you want to accomplish with your garden shed and have taken inventory of your tools and supplies, it’s time to get it all organized for summer seasonal storage. When your supplies are well organized, you won’t waste time or get frustrated looking for shovels or potting soil and you’ll be able to enjoy your gardening time much more! You also won’t spend money on tools you already have and just can’t find.
Handy and Out of the Way
Some tips for seasonal storage of items include solutions for those items that can often get tangled up or just get in the way when you are trying to find your supplies. Wrap your garden hose around a large hook, preferably one with a steep angle, to hold it in place and make it easily accessible but keep it from getting twisted or underfoot.
For your long-handled tools, attach a sturdy tool hanger to the inside of your garden shed’s door. That will free up your walls for handy shelves and the potting bench you may want to install. When you need thin wire or twine for your garden, you can keep it handy and untangled by using a traditional toilet paper holder. Turn the holder on its side and wrap the twine or wire around it so you can easily reach it and cut the length you need.
A Place for the Small Things
Use open metal shelving to let more light filter through in a smaller garden shed. Adjust the shelves to match the needs you identified at the beginning of this process. Store the items you use most, especially those you tend to use every day, on the middle shelves, so they are easier to reach. Other items, that you may use once a month or once a year, should be on the upper and lower shelves.
Install magnetic bars to hold your metal pruning shears and trowels. Make sure the magnet is strong enough to hold your tools so you can easily grab them when you’re ready to trim your plants or dig new holes for seeds.
Hang a small wicker basket in a convenient area and place your garden gloves, reference books, and other small garden gear in the basket. When you’re ready to work in your garden, you’ll have the things you need in a handy place so you can grab it and go!
