The Problem With Prisons & Former Prisoners

There are over 50,000 inmates currently incarcerated in Tennessee’s adult jails and prisons. Statistically, we know that 97% of them will likely be released and based upon national statistics, 70% would end up behind bars again within three years. With a budget just shy of $1,000,000,000 in 2017, The Tennessee Department of Corrections is costly and that doesn’t account for all the hidden costs of incarceration and recidivism in the form of health care, welfare, lost taxes, victim costs, additional law enforcement, and increased homelessness. To learn more about the depth and costs of the prison and former prisoners problem, visit Men Of Valor online.

How MOV is Solving the Prison Problem Locally

Knowing that the traditional warehousing of incarcerated individuals is ineffective and results in a high recidivism rate, Men of Valor operates an innovative form of prerelease programming and aftercare services. Services start when men are at their lowest point – feeling hopeless in a prison cell. MOV’s pre-release programming offers these men six months of Bible study, recovery programming, counseling, Victim Impact classes, and marriage/parent training. Staff and volunteer teachers provide the education and training the men need to start a new life when their sentence is over. Once they are released, Men of Valor meets them immediately to provide a safe supporting living environment through transitional housing and part-time work and job training.

As a result of this faith-based model, Men of Valor has a recidivism rate of less than 8% – as opposed to the national rate of 70%.

The numbers show us that Men of Valor’s programs are working and are directly impacting the community of Nashville in positive ways! With your help, we can assist them in tackling the problems of incarceration and recidivism in exactly the way that matters most – one PERSON at a time!
