MOVING TIPS FOR A SMOOTH MOVE

A move is one of life’s big adventures, but this time can also be very emotional. These moving tips may help with what to expect:

• Take time to say goodbye to the old home. We encourage you to do this with pets and children. Have family and friends come over a couple weeks or days before and have a going away party. Have a welcoming time for your new home.
• Pack a few boxes as an “emergency survival kit.” This way if you get into your home and can’t find everything right away, you have a box or bag that gets you thru a couple of days.
• Prioritize the unpacking process. Everything can’t be done at once, so organize a list of the must-haves and unpack them first. This may include the children rooms and any pet items.
• Get familiar with the new neighborhood. Take a walk or drive around the block with your pets and children so that they can familiarize themselves with the new surroundings. Try to make a game of it by having a scavenger hunt.
• Get the bed ready. Designate one drawer of a dresser for sheets and towels so that you won’t have to rummage through boxes for these essentials the first night in your new home.
• Don’t forget about the fridge. After you’ve thoroughly cleaned and dried the inside of your refrigerator, put a handful of fresh coffee, baking soda or charcoal in a sock or nylon stocking and place it inside to keep the interior smelling fresh.
• Pack heavy and pack light. Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in larger boxes
• Remember the bare necessities: toilet paper, telephone, toiletries, snacks, coffee (and pot), soap, flashlight, screwdriver, pliers, can opener, paper plates, cups, utensils, a couple of pans, and paper towels are some of the essentials you may need upon arrival at your new home. Pack a box with these types of items and ask your van foreman to load it last so that it will be unloaded first.
• Unscrew and remove light bulbs before packing your lamps.
• Be nice to your plants. When moving plants to your new residence via your car, try not to let foliage rest against the windows as the leaves will scorch.
