Have you been thinking about moving to Nashville? Many people are and many of them are waiting for the warm, beautiful months of spring and summer to do it. But what about moving to Nashville in winter?
Maybe it’s never occurred to you, but the cold months can actually be the PERFECT time to make your move to Middle Tennessee, especially since we often have unpredictable winter temperatures that are unseasonable warm.
A few reasons why moving to Nashville in winter might be a great idea:
Flexibility
Work schedules (and kids’ school schedules) are flexible during the holidays. Employees often have less work and more time available to take off during the winter months, particularly November through January. This can give you extra time to pack, move, and even get a few days to settle into your new place before you head back into the office or start a new job.
Moving costs
Peak season for relocating is May to September. Kiddoes are out of school and the weather is warm. Moving October through April, and particularly November through February, means you can take advantage of price breaks on everything from rent to pro mover rates.
Less traffic
You’ve probably heard that Nashville has become the “It” City. Not only are we seeing a boom in permanent growth in Middle TN, we’re also seeing some of highest volumes of tourism and business travel ever! Our tourist season is nearly year round these days, but we slow down the most in the colder months. Not only will that make it easier for you and your moving company to get to your new home, but it will also make it easier to learn your way around your new city.
Be prepared for moving to Nashville in the winter
Don’t pack your warm items
It may sound obvious, but packing and moving is hectic and when you’re moving from a warmer climate to a colder one, it can slip your mind. Keep those gloves handy and have all your warm clothes ready to wear. You don’t want to be scrambling to find that one garment box storing your sweaters and coats as soon as you arrive. Instead, use your suitcases to store your warm clothes so they’re easy to find and access. Bonus points: you save on a couple of boxes!
Watch the weather
Better yet, have a professional watch the weather for you. winter weather in Nashville can, and does, change drastically and quickly. When you hire a pro mover, they are your boy scouts. They’ll be prepared for potential Winter road hazards and any extra time needed for loading, transporting and unloading in cold or icy conditions. (They will also be the ones taking the risk and keeping you safe!)
Winterize your vehicles
You never know when there’s going to be snow and ice when you’re moving to Nashville in winter. Have your vehicles ready to go with winter-ready wipers. Make sure you have an ice scraper and add anti-freeze to your car. It’s also never a bad idea to have your battery checked if it’s nearing replacement time. Cold weather is infamously harsh on older batteries.
Find a way to have your new home ready
Whether it’s your realtor or your new landlord, have someone confirm that your utilities have been connected and have them turn on your heat for you before the day of your move. If you have a fireplace, you may want to have your chimney swept and if it is icy, hire someone to clear your sidewalks and walkways before you and your movers arrive.
Why NOT Move to Nashville in the winter?
If you need another reason why moving to Nashville in winter is actually a great idea, just think of it this way… it’s cold and grey and you aren’t missing out on any outdoor activities.
Really, the question is “Why NOT?” You can be all settled into your new home in your new city by the time spring rolls around with all its sun and fun! Spring in Nashville is amazing. You don’t want to miss it!
