Over time, a large walk-in closet can become one of the most cluttered places in a home because people tend to take the space for granted, carelessly storing shoes, clothes, jewelry and other accessories in a jumbled mess.

You may not realize how much stuff you have accumulated until it’s time to organize it all for a move – and packing closets can be one of the most challenging, time-consuming parts of this process. Here are our top tips for handling this project efficiently.

1. Declutter and Downsize

Moving is an opportunity to pare down your belongings and embrace a more minimalist mindset. Start by evaluating the contents of your master closet – plan to donate or sell anything you haven’t used or worn in the past year.

Once you’ve decided what you want to keep and what you are getting rid of, put the remaining clothes into piles based on season and family member. Start packing your off-season clothing first, since you can safely assume you won’t need it during your move.

2. Set Aside “Moving Week” Clothes

Fully unpacking from a long, complex move can take a week or more to finish. Pack a suitcase with clothes every family member can wear while the rest of your belongings are still boxed up and out of reach. At a minimum, include socks, underwear and pajamas, plus at least two changes of clothes.

3. Wrap Dresser Drawers

Dressers can be tricky to move because they are so bulky. Of course, you can lighten the load by removing the drawers, but instead of boxing up all the clothes and leaving the drawers empty, you can wrap them in plastic to keep items from falling out. Wrap lengthwise, then by width, to add double protection. Then, you can move the drawers with the rest of your packed boxes, and when you arrive at your new home, you can unwrap them and slide them back in place without having to unpack any of their contents.

4. Pack Clothes on Hangers

Does your closet already have a lot of items hung neatly on hangers? If so, taking garments out, folding them into boxes and rehanging everything when you reach your new destination can be too time-consuming. Instead, leave the clothes hung and put them into wardrobe boxes. Taking clothes on hangers directly out of your master closet and moving them as-is will save hours by eliminating the need to iron or wash them when you’re already tired from your move.
