While moving a whole house can be quite tricky, moving an entire office filled with bulky furniture and delicate tech equipment can be even more tricky. Thankfully, there are several things that you can do to make your move as smooth as possible. Start with our tips for packing your office.

First, empty all of the desk drawers and cabinets.

When packing your office, keep in mind that desks and cabinets are quite heavy. To help reduce some of the weight of the item it is best to empty all drawers and shelves prior to moving. Make sure to clearly mark on the box what office the packed items will be going to and what floor the box needs to go to in the new space. Using a color-coded system might be a good idea for packing your office if it will be a larger office move. For smaller offices, simply writing the owner or other identifying information of the contents should suffice.

PRO TIP: After emptying all of the drawers, make sure to use an easy to remove tape and tape all drawers and doors shut. This will help protect the item and walls during the moving process. Blue painters tape works really well here.

Second, use original boxes when possible.

The office is full of large and sometimes fragile equipment like computers and printers. For items such as computers, it is best to keep the original box to use when transporting during a move. The original boxes and inserts are best to help protect your sensitive equipment and keep it secure during a move.

If you do not have access to the original boxes, then invest in high-quality alternatives when packing your office. You may be surprised to find that not all boxes are made the same and you may need to buy a higher quality box to hold your computers and other sensitive office equipment. Also, without the original plastic protectant around your equipment, it is important to make sure you take the time to properly wrap your computers and printers in bubble wrap or other material (best to stay away from packing peanuts for printers) to protect it during transport. You want to make sure your items fit securely and snugly into your box as to limit overall movement. Add a layer of crumpled paper or other packing material to the bottom, sides, and top of the box to create a cushion of support. Don’t forget to properly label your box to let movers know that these items need to be handled with care.
