Summer plans may be changing a bit, but there is still plenty to do right here in Charlotte that will keep you and your family entertained. Staying safe and healthy is the most important goal for the summer, of course, and there are plenty of options for having fun while staying in the Queen City. A guide to staying at home this summer includes opportunities to support local businesses and to enjoy the wide-open spaces of Charlotte, NC.

Enjoy Charlotte Parks

You can remain safely distant while enjoying the fresh air in one of Charlotte’s amazing parks. The 98-acre Freedom Park was opened in 1948 to honor Charlotte’s World War II soldiers. This beautiful park is known for its gorgeous cherry trees that greet you as you enter. Pack a picnic, walk the trails, or hop on your bike to enjoy a fun and healthy day outside. A paved trail that meanders around a 7-acre lake will give you plenty of opportunities for exercise, while staying physically distant from others.

Hike Up a Mountain

Looking for a chance for physical activity that’s a little more stimulating? Check out Crowders Mountain State Park. The Pinnacle and Crowders Mountain peaks offer challenging hikes, towering cliffs, and 25-mile views of the surrounding area on a clear day. The park features eleven trails ranging from easy strolls to the strenuous hike. Up for a real adventure? Take the Ridgeline Trail that links to Kings Mountain State Park across the border in South Carolina.

Order Takeout

Most Charlotte-area restaurants are offering takeout options so you can enjoy professionally prepared food while staying at home this summer. You can support local restaurants during Charlotte Restaurant Week, scheduled for July 17-26. This is a great opportunity to enjoy gnocchi Bolognese, grilled octopus, beef tartare, or chocolate hazelnut pie, while supporting the local chefs and restaurant owners who were hit so hard by the COVID-19 restaurant closures this spring.

Tour Charlotte Online

While staying at home this summer, you can still tour many of the cultural and educational activities that Charlotte has to offer. The Mint Museum offers virtual tours as well as a special program, Museum from Home, so you and your family can enjoy crafts and activities inspired by art.

If you are a NASCAR fan, you can combine your love of racing with some fun educational activities that will keep even the kids entertained! The NASCAR Hall of Fame presents SPARK! Education that includes interactive lessons and a virtual campout. Every week, there are new iRacing videos, lesson plans, and activities for all ages.

Drive Up to a Drive-In

Drive-in theaters are making a comeback. While you are staying at home this summer, you can still enjoy a movie out – outdoors, that is. Stay in the safety of your own car, keeping your distance from others, as you watch exciting summer classics such as Jurassic Park and Jaws with your family. Hound’s Drive-In is just $20 per car for each movie. They’re also planning a drive-in movie concert featuring Garth Brooks.

Go for an Outdoor Wine Tasting

The Charlotte area has several vineyards and wineries that are slowly opening up for outside tastings and for limited numbers of participants. Davidson Wine Co. features a wine tasting on their outdoor patio. For a little more scenery, you can enjoy a wine tasting at Veronét Vineyards & Winery. Nearby Childress Vineyards is offering tastings for groups of fewer than six people.

Listen to Local Bands

Staying at home this summer doesn’t mean you’ll have to miss out on concerts by local Charlotte bands. You can tune in and listen to a concert in the comfort and safety of your home. Check out Music Anywhere CLT, a local initiative designed to “support and protect the live music community and the brilliant minds behind it, encourage the business of music, and share the stories of Queen City sounds locally and internationally to make Charlotte synonymous with music.”
