Visiting Nashville is a fascinating experience. There are plenty of landmarks and attractions for tourists to enjoy. When you live in Nashville, though, you want to discover much more about this great city. You want to live like a Nashville local! Be aware, of course, that as with most areas across the country this summer, there are some restrictions as to what is open and how many people can visit a certain place because of COVID-19. You can still enjoy the exciting local sites that the city has to offer, but you will need to understand the guidelines so you can do so safely.
Phase II Conditions
In Nashville and in Davidson County, Phase II modifications went into effect on July 3, 2020. One of the main things to remember when you go out is your mask – you’ll be required to wear one now. The great news is that social distancing has slowed the rate at which COVID-19 is spreading in Tennessee.
To keep everyone healthy, Phase II conditions include:
- Retail stores and commercial businesses can operate at three-fourths capacity
- Gyms, hair salons, and nail salons can operate at half capacity
- Restaurants may continue to offer dine-in service at half capacity
- Bars that get more than half their revenue from food sales can operate at half capacity
- Live entertainment is permitted
- Metro parks and facilities, including dog parks, tennis courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, skate parks, splash pads, and little league parks are open.
Dine Like a Local
Tourists and locals alike always enjoy Nashville barbecue. One of the iconic local barbecue restaurants is Edley’s Bar-B-Que with three locations in Nashville. Outdoor dining is available on the huge patio at their 12 Avenue South location so you can enjoy the fresh air and check out other locals while you dine.
Looking for something a little more upscale? The Catbird Seat on Division Street is a bit on the pricey side and is very popular. You’ll need to call ahead for reservations – maybe way ahead, depending on when you want to go. The restaurant boasts “an ever-evolving tasting menu experience” and “the opportunity to view the inner workings of an active kitchen.”
Want to grab a slice of local pizza? Check out Two Boots on Broadway. Those in the know in Nashville say the Kitty is the best pizza they have, topped with Hattie B’s famous hot chicken.
Speaking of hot chicken, that is a very popular and very local thing to enjoy in Nashville. Hattie B’s dining room is closed for now, but they offer self-service patios in three locations throughout the city. Prince’s Hot Chicken is another popular local spot where you can order your chicken XXXhot, XXhot, Xhot, hot, medium, mild, or plain.
Listen to the Music
Everyone knows Nashville is famous for the Grand Old Opry and for the Ryman Auditorium. If you want to live like a Nashville local, check out some of the less famous venues in the heart of Music City. The 3rd and Lindsley Bar & Grill is half a mile south of Broadway and features a wide range of good music and good food.
Featuring many in-store shows as well as a range of record albums, Third Man Records is a Nashville staple. The store was opened by Jack White of The White Stripes and highlights local artists during shows in its Blue Room.
The Listening Room on 4th Avenue South was “built on live music.” The venue’s owner says their goal is to “showcase songs in their purest form as well as offer a great dining experience.” A true Nashville experience for you as you will enjoy local music and a menu featuring local ingredients.
Get Outside
The dining and music scene in Nashville is top-notch, but when you want to live like a Nashville local, you’ll also need to get outside and enjoy the many outdoor activities the city has to offer. One of the best places to explore is the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile recreational road and scenic drive that roughly follows the “Old Natchez Trace” a historic travel corridor used by Native Americans, “Kaintucks,” European settlers, slave traders, soldiers, and future presidents.
Another local outdoor favorite is the Nashville Farmers’ Market where you’ll find “fresh produce, artisanal food, restaurants, shops, crafts, classes, and chef demos.” When you want to live like a Nashville local, there’s no better place to be than the local farmers’ market.
